What’s a Compressor and How Does it Affect Your Home?

Today, we’re going to shine a light on a deserving part of your air conditioning system—the compressor. Your air conditioning compressor is important. Through the years though, we’ve found that whenever we bring this up to homeowners, their face turns into a big question mark.

We understand this. There is so much that you have to take care of on a daily basis that we’re sure you don’t end the day winding down over your air conditioner’s operation manual. It’s unnecessary for you to understand how every single gear and part in your air conditioner works. However, we do want you to understand the compressor because it’s important to your overall AC.

Compressor 101

The odds are that you have a standard central air conditioning system at home. Just statistically speaking, these are the most common type of air conditioning in Port St. Lucie and across the country. In a standard central air conditioning system, the air conditioner is “split.” You might not be so familiar with your compressor because it isn’t actually tucked away into your home. Your compressor is housed in the outdoor unit.

The compressor is in charge of circulating the refrigerant through your air conditioning system. The refrigerant is necessary for the heat exchange process. The heat exchange process is what applies energy to the refrigerant and subsequently makes your home feel cool. If you didn’t have refrigerant, your home’s air conditioner would just cycle tepid air on an endless loop.

How a Compressor Affects Your Home

Now let’s talk about how your compressor could potentially impact your home. We don’t mean to be negative here, but we’re going to talk about the adverse effects that a damaged air conditioning compressor can have. We find that it’s harder to understand the impact of a situation if we’re not describing the potential adverse effects. Talking about how an air conditioning compressor can positively affect your home would really just be us talking about business as usual with your air conditioner.

Here are a few signs to watch out for. All these signs point to a failing air conditioning compressor.

  • Your AC Sounds Like a Bomb: Is your air conditioner ticking nonstop when you turn it on? You might think that this is odd, but typically homeowners find this to be fairly benign and easily overlooked. We don’t want you to think this way.
  • Your Home’s Air is Warm: Is the air that blows out of your air conditioner’s vents just a little too warm for your liking? We’re not talking hot air, we’re talking warm, tepid air that forces you to run your air conditioner for way longer than you should.
  • There’s Low Airflow: Have you noticed that the air coming out of your air conditioner isn’t as strong as you’re used to? This is the sign of a bad compressor. A failing compressor hurts the strength of your AC.
